Below is a listing of our past events, see what we've been up to...
December 2010 - NMJAG Meeting/Party
- WHEN: Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at 6:30 p.m.
- WHERE: Bohn Bohn Beads, 701 Lake Street, Roscommon
- QUESTIONS? Contact Terry, Stephanie, or Nancy. See our contact info on the Members page.
We'll have a free-formed gathering with a holiday jewelry theme. We're encouraging folks to bring ideas and/or jewelry to share. We hope to have Internet access so your contribution could be the address of handcrafted holiday jewelry you like.
We'll also discuss the jewelry we're making and donating to the River House domestic crisis shelter in Grayling. We need a few more pieces.
November 2010 Meeting:
Stephanie has signed up her shop (Bohn Bohn Beads in Roscommon) AND the Northern Michigan Jewelry Artist Guild, to participate in the November 9th Girl's Night. It's an annual Roscommon event in which downtown shops participate with special activities and sales aimed at the gals. We'll do this for our meeting this month.
NMJAG members are welcome to sell jewelry at Steph's building. She'll have hall tables set up for our wares We'll all work together to cover each others items so we don't all need to be there the whole time. She's signed up to participate from 1-8. She'd also like to have jewelry making demonstration most hours. I'm imagining Steph showing how to make glass beads or pendants. We'll need other volunteers for demos.
We need people to:.
- Bring your handmade jewelry to sell (one item or lots of em - your choice)
- Help to set up that day
- Take money for sales (we'll pool all sales, track who sells what, and divide it up after.) These folks will need a little extra training before the event.
- Be around to answer questions and have fun with the rest of us.
- People to demonstrate simple jewelry making things each hour. Think about something simple you like to do that you could demonstrate for folks who don't know about jewelry making.
What to do right now? Mostly think so you'll be ready when we ask for specific commitments.
You'll receive an emailed survey shortly. Please complete it ASAP. You can also complete the survey by going to this link:

Guild member Nancy Cornett, will walk us all through creating earrings incorporating wire techniques of love knots, hammered spirals, antiquing your work with liver of sulpher, and tumbling for final shine. No experience is required. Once again supplies will be provided, but we'll need folks to bring tools if you have them. Members have already been emailed a list of tools and other details. If you are not a current member but would like to attend, please contact us and we'll send you more information.
- Our 3rd NMJAG Meeting
Glass artist, and Bohn Bohn Bead owner, Stephanie Bohnsack, will walk us all through making a simple dichroic glass pendant. (What the heck is dichroic glass? Click here for lots of examples.) Absolutely no experience required. She has all the materials and tools needed. Although she has offered to donate everything we'll need, we may recommend a small donation to cover the cost of your supplies (we'll decide at the meeting.)
Our second NMJAG Meeting
We had so much fun at our first (4/29) meeting we couldn't wait a whole month until our 2nd one! It will be 5/12/10. See below this description for where and when. Since we are just forming, now is the time to make sure you have a voice in the future direction of NMJAG. For more information and directions please email us at northernmichiganjag@gmail.com or submit your name and email on our Contact Us page.
At this second meeting you may bring some things you've created and a project to work on (but feel free to just come to look, too.) We'll be meeting at Bohn Bohn Beads which is also the studio of owner/NMJAG member Stephanie Bohnsack. We'll spend time touring the studio and exploring all the tools she has to make jewelry, glass art, and lampwork beads.
We're still evolving, but will start with something informal where people can bring things they are working on and see what others are doing. Those who are interested may share tips and techniques with others. We have members who have offered to run demos/short classes in the future. Current ideas for topics include photographing your jewelry, opening an (online) Etsy shop to sell your wares, local opportunities to sell/showcase your jewelry, as well as learning new jewelry making techniques.
Of course, we'll also be discussing the evolution of NMJAG.
This is an early reminder that our next NMJAG meeting is the 2nd Tuesday in October (10/12/10). We'll be making simple jewelry gifts for the River House Shelter ("a nonprofit agency that serves victims and survivors of homelessness, domestic abuse and sexual violence in four northern Michigan counties: Crawford, Ogemaw, Oscoda, and Roscommon counties."). Children staying at the center will have the opportunity to choose gifts to give to their mothers for Christmas. We'll want 20-25 gifts.
We need volunteers to help with this projects.
Please consider the following:
- Someone to contact local newspapers about mentioning our guild and this volunteer effort.
- Someone, or multiple people, to bring 25 boxes and/or gift bags and ribbons, etc. (we want things the kids can open to see the gift, but be able to close up to give to their moms.)
- Multiple people to bring extra beads, wire, ear wires, etc.
- Everybody to attend, make jewelry, OR be a gofer and wrapper. More details will follow closer to the meeting date.
July 13, 2010: Our 6th NMJAG Meeting
We've had a few meetings organized by a couple of people. Now it's time for everyone to have a voice - so our next meeting will be devoted to figure out what we'll do during the next several meetings. If you haven't attended one of our meetings, now is a great time to help ensure there'll be activities that interest you. If you are not a current member but would like to attend, please contact us and we'll send you more information.
Please give some thought to this topic before the meeting. Possible ideas are learning new techniques (see something you'd like to try? Let's chat about it.), field trips, group projects, bringing in outside instructors, recruiting new members, etc.
